Idaho Tax: Free online income tax filing available
BOISE, IDAHO — Feb. 3, 2010 — If you want to file your income tax return for free online, check out the Idaho Tax Commission's Web site at tax.idaho.gov. The site features software companies that offer qualifying taxpayers free electronic filing for both federal and Idaho income tax returns. To get a list of providers and their eligibility requirements, click on the "Free income tax filing" link on the home page of Idaho Tax website.
Idaho has joined with the Internal Revenue Service and software developers to provide this free service to taxpayers.
"We suggest taxpayers look carefully at different providers to see which free filing offers they qualify for," said Doreen Warren, revenue operations administrator for the Tax Commission. She added, "Taxpayers must use the same provider to file their federal and state tax returns."
Although the Tax Commission Web site only displays providers that offer free electronic filing, there are many providers that offer electronic filing for a fee.
"Some vendors charge for either the state or federal tax return, while others charge for both," said Warren. "We recommend taxpayers shop around for the vendor that best meets their needs."
Electronic filing is a fast, easy way to file taxes and allows taxpayers to get a quicker refund than if they file by paper.
Last year more than 62 percent of Idahoans filed their individual income taxes online.
