Tax Man puts local couple in taxing situation
Alex Villarreal, 26 May 2010 -- Many of us don't trust ourselves to do our own taxes. It's a big responsibility, more suited for a professional.
When a New Braunfels couple's tax return didn't make it to the IRS, they called Barry Davis and Eyewitness Wants To Know.
Ali Cheraif asked, "Who knows where our documents ended up?"
The IRS recently sent Ali and his wife Tiffany a letter stating their 2007 taxes were never filed, so they called their "Tax Man", Thomas Edwards.
"He said well I can't believe that and can you please get me a written document or something that shows that these taxes were never filed," Cheraif said.
Thomas Edwards used to own "Tax Man." He did do the Cheraif's taxes, but apparently, didn't want to talk to them after their first conversation.
"We sent it to him over four times and we have it always registered mail...and he never got back to us," Ali said.
He also said he went to Edwards' office five times and left at least 10 messages, but never got a call back.
We went to "Tax Man" and met with Edwards. He refused to go on camera and said he never got any of Cheraif's messages. He also said he's confident the return left his office with the U.S. Postal Service, but he can't prove it.
He is offering the Cheraif's half of the cost of preparing the tax return, $167.50.
In the future, Cheraif plans on doing his own taxes.
