Ohio Tax: Tax relief deadline near
MARION, 29 May 2010 -- Marion County Auditor Joan Kasotis reminds taxpayers that the deadline for applying for both real estate and manufactured home tax savings through the Homestead Program is June 7.
This program provides a tax relief to homeowners who are either 65 years of age and older or permanently disabled, and own and occupy their home as their principal place of residence, according to a news release. This exemption, which takes the form of a credit on property tax bills, allows qualifying homeowners to exempt $25,000 of the market value of their home from all local property taxes. For example, through the Homestead Exemption, a home with a market value of $100,000 would be billed as if it is worth $75,000.
The potential savings range is from $264 to $462 annually, depending on the taxing district. Local governments, including schools, are fully reimbursed from state income tax dollars.
Applications are available at the Marion County Auditor's Office or can be downloaded from the Auditor's Web site at www.co.marion.oh.us/auditor. Those already enrolled do not need to renew annually.
