california business fairs: Free San Gabriel Valley Small Business Fair

Judy Chu, Ph.D., Vice Chair of the State Board of Equalization (BOE), Assemblymember Dr. Ed Hernandez, O.D, the West Covina Chamber of Commerce, and the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center today announced that federal, state, and local government agencies will be available for a free one day Small Business Fair in the San Gabriel Valley.

Representatives from the BOE, Franchise Tax Board, Internal Revenue Service, Employment Development Department, U.S. Small Business Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, City of Covina, Asian Pacific Island Small Business Program, and other local, state, and federal agencies will be available to assist attendees.

The fair topics will be presented in a two-track format to assist attendees interested in starting a business or growing a business. Classes in track one for starting your business include Basic Sales and Use Tax, Surviving and Thriving in Today's Economy, State Income Tax and Small Business, Making Taxes Easier for Small Businesses Filing Schedule C, and Writing a Business Plan. Track two classes for growing your business include Marketing Your Business, Better Business through Better Records, Sales and Use Tax: How to Avoid Common Pitfalls; Employee or Independent Contractor, and the Bottom Line – Top Dollar Advice for Tough Economic Times.

Vice Chair Judy Chu represents the Fourth Board of Equalization District, which includes Los Angeles County. She won election to the BOE in November 2006 and was elected Vice Chair of the Board of Equalization in January 2009.

California State Board of Equalization is a publicly elected tax board. The BOE collects more than $53 billion annually in taxes and fees supporting state and local government services. It hears business tax appeals, acts as the appellate body for franchise and personal income tax appeals, and serves a significant role in the assessment and administration of property taxes.
