Bangladesh Tax: Jalil exempted of tax evasion
A Dhaka court has exempted former Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil from a tax evasion case.
Judge AFM Aminul Islam of the First Special Judge's Court in Dhaka issued the order on Tuesday after hearing an appeal for exemption.
Jalil was present at the hearing.
His lawyer Mokhlesur Rahman Badal, former president of Dhaka Bar, told bdnews24.com, "The court has let him off the hook under Section 265 (C) of the criminal procedures code, as the tax demanded in the case filed by National Revenue Board (NBR) was already paid."
Deputy tax commissioner of NBR M Bazlur Rahman Khan had filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judges Court on Oct 15 last year.
The case accused Jalil of evading taxes worth Tk 0.5 million by concealing assets worth around Tk 5.5 million.
The court had issued a warrant against him on that very day.
But two days later, Jalil was granted bail by the High Court on Oct 18.
The preparation of the charge sheet was delayed for five times.
