Orange County Tax: Commissioners Turn Down CHCCS Tax Increase
Orange County Commissioners voted against multiple tax increases at their Tuesday night budget meeting, including one that would have helped raise funds for the beleaguered Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
The school district had proposed a tax increase of .25 cents per dollar to help make up for a budget shortfall in the system. The tax would have been limited geographically, and would not have applied throughout every part of the county.
CHCCS would receive about $36.56 million in expense appropriations under the proposed budget, with Orange County Schools receiving approximately $22.78 million.
The commissioners approved a resolution to adopt the fiscal year 2010-2011 budget at their June 15 meeting. The budget includes a county pay and benefits plan that lacks a cost-of-living or in-range salary increase, as well as enacting a six-month hiring freeze.
